Kolkata, the city of joy is known for its sweet language and food .Keeping the tradition alive, we at dailymirage have decided to shower our love for the city with a dedication to food and their stories within. February is the month of love and celebrations and trust me for true Bongs of Kolkata, no celebration or pampering can be complete without food. Our search starts with a posh locality in South Kolkata.
1st February 6.30 pm, Location: Ballygunje Terrace, Golpark: Ornaate ..The café store.
A tiring day at office today and Devraj, Aroon and Myself had to catch up for our work for the blog. Our foodie , Mr. Lahiri (Devraj) suggested to come down to Ballygunje for the discussion. Honestly speaking, I had no energy left but forced myself till Ballygunje until I entered this little lane next to Anjali Jewelers. As I alighted from my cab, I could see a quiet little coffee shop. The interiors with the cozy pillows, dim lights, the beautiful aroma of coffee, paintings on display and the warm stoned walls, everything had magic in it, Ornaate so like its name is a well decorated coffee joint that welcomes every tiring soul with a smiling comfort.
The menu though not elaborate could cater to any hungry soul. I decided to settle with a thick chocolate cold milk shake to start with and I must admit it was a game changer an ultimate energizer with bits of chocolate and ice-cream. Our Coffee addict, Aroon tasted the Caribbean café, one of the international favorites in-house. This small place is a mecca of coffee and they serve varieties exported from nook and corners of the world like:
- Ethiopian Yirgacheffee
- Sumatran Mandheling
- Kenya AA
- Cameroon Coffee
- Turkish Coffee (Full City Blend)
- Portuguese Coffee
- Italian Coffee
- Argentine Coffee
They have a custom of introducing new flavors every Friday of the month , the flavor for this month is Colombian Coffee. To add to this, the jewelry that are designed draws inspiration from the flavor introduced, something I got to know from the man behind Ornaate, Neil , one of the owners of this beautiful landmark.
The food, must say was very appealing and tasty, a chicken platter, some sandwiches and fries filled our tummy with delight. There are homemade cookies, cupcakes and appetizers to add to the spread. Plus Pork ,Chicken Platters and Tortilla Wraps that are the hot selling items and a favorite of customers. From the middle of this month, Ornaate will start selling coffee beans for the coffee lovers to relish the taste at home.
Daily Mirage was lucky to have a quick conversation with Neil , the brain child behind Ornaate. A very friendly and chirpy guy he is and despite his busy schedule he did take time to explain the idea behind Ornaate and took us through their varied display .
Ornaate is not just about food, it is a modern comfort joint. You can get Books, cards, accessories , coffee mugs and little goodies of souvenirs as memories to take away. The overwhelming hospitality of the owner and his staff, the dark walls with classy interiors hanging can add the zing to any conversation.
Dailymirage is elated to start our food journey for the month with Ornaate- The Café Store. We look forward to visit more such places and keep you all posted with our food diary, Kolkata’ very own “Food Tale”.
